Dyslexia, Multilingualism, and Equity<\/h2>\n

Dyslexia occurs at similar rates across nationalities and languages, but California underidentifies students who need dyslexia intervention from already underserved groups, multiplying inequity. Students at economic disadvantage, students of color, multilingual students, and students with disabilities are underidentified as dyslexic, keeping them from the specific interventions that would address their neurodiversity. <\/span><\/p>\n

While the new dyslexia screening mandatory in 2025-2026 aims to address that inequity, underserved families may also be less receptive due to generational education trauma. Participants will learn about the intersection of dyslexia and multilingualism and practice screening for dyslexia for multilingual students and delivering multilingual interventions. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Preschool Transitional Kindergarten and Learning Foundations<\/a> (PTKLF) Language and Literacy domain focuses on the crucial language skills children develop in their early years, setting the stage for future language and literacy success.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this groundbreaking document, the CDE elevates the importance of multilingualism and translanguaging. Learn how supporting a child’s home language can boost their English language development, as strong foundational language skills in one language transfer when learning another. The PTKLF is also designed to enhance continuity across preschool to third grade (P\u20133) learning goals and practice.<\/span><\/p>\n

Explore how to leverage this valuable resource to guide observations, set meaningful learning goals, and design activities that promote equity and inclusion for all children.<\/span><\/p>\n
